Toubkal Circuit Trek

This is a true circuit of the high atlas. This round-trip takes six days; this route takes you over six high passes, in comfortable stages, before culminating in an Ascent of the country’s highest mountain, Mount Toubkal (4165m). This is a true circuit of the mountain; no backtracking, mini loops or, trek through the spectacular Toubkal valley is a truly memorable journey. We will be rewarded with fine views of Toubkal and surrounding peaks, alongside meeting the hospitible Berber working their terraces. We walk on average 4 – 6 hours per day.

Most successful treks are tailor made with client requirements, age and numbers in consideration. Please have dates in mind and approximate number of people.
All our treks include an English speaking guide, mules and a cook, transport to and from Marrakech and all food whilst on the trek.

Walking Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Tinerhourhine Village. At around 9 in the morning set out from Marrakech for a pleasantly exhilarating 1/2 hour drive south into the High Atlas Mountains toward the tiny hamlet of Imlil. From here we walk along a mule track to the Berber village of Tinerhourhine over Tizi n’Tamertert into the Imenane Valley (Total walking approx. 4/5hrs).

Day 2: Tinerhourhine Village – Imenane valley – Aguersiouål – Matat. We set out today towards the east, up winding mule tracks to the ikkis (2100m), and thence up to the Tizi Aguersiouâl (1938m). Once through the col we shall now go down more winding mule tracks leading to the village of Aguersiouâl where we stop for our lunch before we head to our (Berber House at Matat village) (Total walking approx. 4-5 hrs).

Day 3: Matat – Azaden Valley – Tizi n’Oussem – Aazib Tamsoult. Depart Matat village towards the village of Id Aissa whilst passing at Tizi-Oudite. on an interesting 5 hour hike up along the Assif n’Ouissedene Valley, passing through several Berber villages, up through the hamlet of Oussem (1800m) and the Âazib Tamsoult (2250m), where we’ll where we overnight in Âazib at 2700m above the Assif n’Ouarzane Valley.). (Total walking approx. 5-6 hrs.)

Day 4: Aazib Tamsoult – Tizi m’Zik – Imlil – Aroumd Village. We strike out up through pine and juniper trees to traverse the Tizi M’Zik and descend slowly to the foot of the col just before the hamlet of M’Zik (1806m) where we stop for our picnic amidst orchards of cherry, apple. This afternoon, we set off up to the Berber trailhead village of Aroumd, where we may take a welcome hot shower in the Gite d’étape. (Total walking approx. 5-6 hrs.)

Day 5: Aroumd to Nelter Hut – 3,210m. An early start for the long, slow ascent to the Neltner Refuge (3207m), the base camp for Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Leaving the green fields of Aroumd we follow the Mizane valley past the holy shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, a place of pilgrimage for many Moroccans. There are a number of small shops where we can purchase refreshments. After a picnic lunch by the river we continue the climb to the Neltner Refuge. (7 hours walking). Overnight Refuge.

Day 6: Summit Day! Mt Toubkal 4,167m – Marrakech. We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit. If conditions are good it should take no more than 2-3 hours to reach the summit, where we enjoy expansive views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond. Returning to base, we then descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Aremd via Mizane River, along a well-forested trail, to the trailhead at Imlil. Our mules have arrived before us and after loading the vehicle we bid farewell to our crew and drive back to Marrakech. We expect to arrive in the late afternoon.
